Ulysses does not use the traditional Aristotelian construction found in most plays, novels and for example Hollywood movies. Ulysses does not begin with a conflict, move on to a complication, then crisis, and finally resolution; nor does it use the arc plot common to most novels. Ulysses is the record of a single day, seen mostly from the POV and through the internal monologue oof three characters. However Ulysses is clearly not a simple record of whatever happens during a fictional day, but shows much artifice and copious and profound aesthetic working, using Joyce's scholarship. As shown in my book, Joyce was quite familiar with and very interested in Freud. He explicitly, and also in more hidden ways, used the construction and grammatology of a dream, in Freud's account of Dreamwork. Freud's version of how dreams are generated and constructed strikes true in many respects, yet it is idiosyncratic, and hardly the last word or indubitable. Yet in many respects Joyce followed Freud's insights. My dissertation is thus perhaps the best account of how Ulysses is, in part. structured.
