AMPHIBIOUS COMBAT VEHICLES AND LANDING CRAFT Amphibious warfare is a big subject with lots of moving parts. I decided to split the subject into this book on amphibious vessels that actually hit the beach and another book on the ships that get them there. I tried to determine how many of each type were produced and of course no one knows how many vehicles the Russians lost in Ukraine. Note that most of the landing craft are from World War II. I include them here as a good way to understand the evolution of the amphibious assault vehicles that came after them. We've come a long way from the wood Higgins boats originally designed 85 years ago and the designs today were developed after learning some hard-fought lessons in Europe and the Pacific.
