Anneke Jans/ Bogardus. Anneke was born in 1610 and emigrated to New Amsterdam in 1630 with her husband Roeloff Jansen. By the time of the death of her second husband, she owned 61 acres in what is now the Manhattan district of New York City. In the intervening years since Anneke's death in 1663, numerous attempts have been made, some fraudulent, to regain what the heirs regarded as their just inheritance. This book draws on papers left by Lewis upon his death in 1935, to tell the story of his involvement with the Anneke Jans/ Bogardus Heirs’ Association.
