Wake Me After the Apocalypse (Bunker)($14.99Value)

Description

When a killer comet hurtles for the earth, 18-year-old Joanna Murphy is selected to wait out the apocalypse in an underground bunker. She enters cryosleep with her close-knit team, preparing to resettle the planet after the atmosphere clears in two hundred years. Joanna is the only one who wakes up. Faced with a bunker full of bones and a blocked exit, Joanna must claw her way to the surface, figure out what happened to her team, and try not to panic—or die. That’s going to be tricky if she’s the only person left in the world. From the author of The Seabound Chronicles, Steel and Fire, and The Lost Clone comes a story of resilience and optimism at the end of the world. "The plot of the story is spellbinding, and I found myself staying up all night just to finish the book. Easy reading, characters to whom the reader is effortlessly drawn, a setting that is global yet condensed, all are earmarks of Ms. Rivet's captivating writing style." -Author Marion Marchetto "Joanna and her fellow characters are excellently written. Joanna is perceptive and determined. At the beginning of the book, she follows the course that others have set for her. Throughout the story, she learns from her mistakes, and begins to make her own decisions. Her resilience and optimism resonated strongly with me. Five stars to Wake Me After the Apocalypse ." -Author Katherine A Massengill "A bittersweet tale of life and love in a post-apocalyptic world." -Storied Scribbles "Successfully entertains readers with clear, effortless prose and compelling characters." -Publishers Weekly "With a change of genre but the same skillful storytelling as her past series, Rivet chronicles the last days of life on earth before a comet comes to wipe out every living thing. Joanna Murphy is one of thousands chosen to be cryogenically frozen underground for two hundred years, after which scientists speculate that the surface of the earth will be safe once again. The purpose of the bunkers is to build a utopia in the new world, but almost from the beginning, corruption and the forces of nature work to foil that plan, and Joanna wakes to a new life that is vastly different from what anyone imagined." -Susie D., Copy Editor, Red Adept Editing Chapter One Excerpt Waking up from cryosleep was Joanna's least favorite activity--and this was only the second time she'd done it.  It felt like drowning at first. She was enveloped in a viscous liquid that pressed closer than her own skin. Her body seized as her vital functions reanimated: heartbeat, blood flow, lung contractions. Awareness returned in a rush, and she felt an overwhelming urge to claw her way to the surface and gasp for air, but she couldn't control her limbs yet.  Instead she floated down, down, until her back touched something solid, and she settled slowly onto the bottom of the tank. She kept her eyes closed as the thick cryo liquid drained from her face, leaving behind a slimy residue, as though a snail had crawled all over her bare skin.  The cryo machine beeped steadily by Joanna's right ear. Consciousness had shown up before her body was fully warm--unfortunately--so the next sound she heard was her own teeth chattering. The cold ebbed gradually, leaving her nauseous and trembling, suppressing the urge to vomit. A few of her teammates had thrown up in their tanks during their training runs, and she was determined not to emulate them, even as she became aware of a truly foul taste in her mouth. Joanna had only one opportunity to practice waking from cryosleep during her orientation. Then, she emerged from the slippery depths of stasis already looking forward to a hot meal and a stolen kiss from Garrett. Today's awakening wouldn't be quite as cozy. But after sleeping for over two hundred years, she was about to join Garrett and the others in the vital task of resettling the earth. She could handle a little discomfort. "Remain still until program terminates."  The disembodied voice startled her, and her limbs twitched, the cryo liquid sloshing around her. The machine continued to cycle through the countdown sequence.  "Cryo drain completes in thirty-two seconds."  The recording sounded different from what she remembered. Slightly muffled and frantic. She hoped her hearing wasn't damaged. The human body wasn't designed to sleep for hundreds of years, and she expected some negative consequences. At least her heart was beating, an eager patter that got faster the longer she lay there in the receding puddle of goo. Her front half was free of the cryo liquid now. The sequence wasn't complete yet, but Joanna couldn't wait any longer. She opened her eyes.  Red light bathed the stone ceiling above her, refracted through the clear lid of her tank.  That's odd.  The chamber had a distinct blue tint when she climbed into her tank what felt like the night before, and she remembered the ceiling being a lot higher. Something wasn't right. She blinked through the goo coating her lashes, but the
