The format of this book is designed to help you better understand what the Devi Mahatmyam teaches about issues that come up in your daily life. By reading just one page each day, at the end of a year you will know a great deal about the Mother Goddess, and how She can make a significant improvement in how frequently you experience pure joy. Each page of this book begins with a short passage from the Devi Mahatmyam in italics. This is my own translation. I do not present it here for its technical merits. It is not intended to be a scholarly translation. Rather, it is offered as the translation of one who very much loves this book and the Divine Mother it presents. It is a devotional translation and is given that you might come to realize at least some of the passion that I have experienced in working with the text over these last five years. The next part of each page is a short transliterated Sanskrit excerpt from the daily passage under consideration. This original text claims special power to remove our inner demons if we simply chant the mantras contained herein. Each verse of the Devi Mahatmyam contains approximately four mantras of eight syllables each. I present only one eight-syllable mantra for each daily reading in this volume. I sincerely believe that if the reader will make a commitment to chant that single mantra throughout the day, the Divine Mother will come in power and bring amazing transformations to light. The activities of the Goddess Chandi were first described in a Sanskrit scripture called the Markandeya Purana, which dates to approximately 900 B.C. Chand means to tear. Chandi tears apart enmity, making us lovers of life. She tears apart duality, making us yogis of union. She is a Goddess of personal transformation, causing humanity to evolve beyond the insignificant attachments of egotism to become divine sages and seers. Contained within the Markandeya Purana are the seven hundred verses of the Devi Mahatmyam, or Chandi Path, the story of the manifestations of the Goddess and how she battles with the forces of the Ego which create obstacles in our lives. Our obstacles rob us of our sense of purpose and enjoyment of life, until we are reminded to turn our attention to the gifts of the all powerful Goddess within us. Rick Veda Nafzinger is a Hindu pujari, Christian minister, Wiccan priest, and current President of the Interfaith Council of San Joaquin. He founded the Circle of the Feminine Divine in Stockton, California, a worship and study group devoted to exploring the meaning of the "Motherhood of God" and its implications for understanding and appreciating all the world's religions.
